Excerpts from this week's Message

"Paid in Full"

by Apostle Stephen De Souza

John 19: 28-30 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Jesus died on the day of the Feast of Passover (Good Friday) at around 3 pm. It was the time of the evening sacrifice. Whilst the High Priest was offering up the paschal lamb in the Temple - God the Father was offering up His Son at Mount Calvary on a cross for the sins of all men. The High Priest would declare that 'it is finished' after he offered up the sacrifice. Jesus declared "it is finished" after "knowing that all things were now accomplished". His divine assignment was successfully completed and so He gave up the ghost.

The Greek word used for "it is finished" is 'Tetelestai' meaning 'the debt is paid in full'. Jesus paid the debt that we couldn't pay. It was the debt of sin. For the debt of sin to be paid in full - it required the taking of a life. The bible states that the wages of sin is death - not just mere death but also eternal separation from God in hell. Jesus took our death - He paid the debt in full.

We should have hanged on the cross and die because we were all guilty of sin. However, Jesus, the Sinless One, took our sins upon Himself and died our death so that we can have His righteousness in exchange. On the basis of what He did, we can now ask God to forgive of our sins and He will forgive us and wash them all away.  When God forgives, He forgets. Praise God that the debt has been paid in full.
